Discover Free Seeds in Montreal: A Budget-Friendly Gardening Hack

Looking for a way to add some greenery to your space while saving a few bucks? I've stumbled upon a fantastic freebie in Montreal that I just had to share with you!

Did you know that many of the city’s libraries and éco-quartiers offer a diverse selection of seeds, absolutely free of charge, for you to plant in your garden or balcony? It's true! Residents have the opportunity to exchange or donate their own seeds and plant cuttings, as well as borrow essential garden tools.

With just your library card (except for Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie), you can access seeds for herbs, edible or ornamental flowers, fruits, vegetables, and even organic or heirloom medicinal and indigenous plants.

Selection of Seeds

Your library card (excluding Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie) grants you access to a wide range of seeds, catering to various gardening preferences.

Seed Exchanges and Donations

This initiative operates on the principle of communal sharing. Alongside acquiring seeds, residents are encouraged to share their harvest with the wider community. Many libraries and éco-quartiers gladly accept exchanges and donations of seeds grown without the use of pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, or cross-pollination.

I primarily frequent the borough of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce/Côte-des-Neiges, and here's a breakdown of the quantity limits and locations for libraries in this area:

3755 Rue Botrel,
Montréal, QC H4A 3G8
Maximum of 10 envelopes per season

5290 Chemin de la Côte-des-Neiges, Montréal, QC H3T 1Y2
Three envelopes per week, up to a maximum of 12 per season

Benny Library
6400 Avenue de Monkland,
Montréal, QC H4B 1H3
Four envelopes per week, up to a maximum of 12 per year

For more information and to locate the nearest library or eco-center in your borough, visit the city of Montreal's website.

Please note that while the libraries mentioned don't provide gardening supplies, some others might!

So, why wait? Dive into the world of gardening with this fantastic opportunity.

Happy planting! 🌱
